Should I install a smoke detector in every room?

Smoke and heat detectors are very important for a fire protection system and the trained fire service workers usually plan for smoke detectors, alarm installation. The smoke detectors should be placed in such areas where a fire incident may happen, so that can be detected and controlled in the early stages. Now before discussing the installation of smoke detectors, let us know what is smoke detector?

  • The specifications of smoke detectors:

Smoke detectors are used to detect fire at the early stage and make the inhabitants alert regarding a possible fire incident. It collects the information from the smoke detectors or sensors that send the signal to the fire alarms or the fire alarm monitoring service in California, once it senses smokes, which may cause a large fire if not controlled at the earliest. In the smoke detectors, an optical detector is placed in the chamber and that activates and sends the signal when a certain amount of smoke passes through the chamber.

So we can understand that smoke detectors are very important for a fire protection system. Now the question arises where the smoke detectors should be installed or should we install smoke detectors in every room of our house?

  • Yes, we should install smoke detectors in every room.

As per the guideline of the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code minimum of one smoke detector should be installed in every bedroom, where the inhabitants sleep at night along with one outside of the sleeping area. This will ensure maximum protection when you are not aware and sleeping and this will intimate you and your family about any possible fire incident, even when you are sleeping.

As per the professional fire alarm monitoring companies in California maximum fire incident happens during night time, while the inhabitants rest asleep. Because during the daytime the small fires can be controlled and put out, but during night time everyone stays unaware about the small fires that may turn devastating. To ensure maximum protection the fire department has regulated to install at least one smoke detector in each sleeping room and one outside the sleeping area.

  • Smoke alarms installation guide:

You should choose smoke alarms that have the label of a reputed testing laboratory, so you can rest assured about their performance. In California, fire alarm systems are widely available and the concerned department advises installing smoke detectors in the living room, basement, and near the stairway to ensure maximum security.

But installing smoke alarms in the kitchens is tricky and the chances of false alarms are there, as smoke in the kitchen is quite normal. To minimize the chance of false alarms the department has advised to install the smoke alarms at least 10 feet or 3 meters distance from a cooking appliance. Also, as per the reputed fire alarm test services in California, the smoke alarms should be mounted high on walls or ceilings. For the wall-mounted smoke detectors, the devices should be installed less than 12 inches away from the ceiling to ensure their effectiveness.
